Winter League - 2007/8

March 2nd, 2008

What an excellent performance and result at Salisbury on 20th February in Round 3 of the Winter League. Lots of superb swims, PBs and no disqualifications meant a 5th place in the Gala on the night but more importantly, a fantastic 8th place overall in the League. This has brought us into 10th place after the three qualifying rounds and allows us to be there at Gala 2 in Division 1 on 15th March. We can then try to improve on last year’s 3rd place in the Gala and 8th place overall. Mike Wootton has already started ‘rallying the troops’ for the final Gala at Trowbridge so, once again, make sure Mike knows that you are available and lets really swim hard on the 15th.

Winter League – 2007/8

February 7th, 2008

After the first two rounds of this year’s winter league Penguins are lying in a disappointing 13th Place out of the 23 teams.

A tough opening gala held at Salisbury in December saw a severely depleted squad (30 compared to the 44 originally selected) produce a fighting display to finish 5th in the gala but 13th overall in the league. The younger swimmers put in some excellent performances and, with gaps in the older age groups, many swimmers were asked to do extra swims and they responded magnificently.
The second round was recently held in Trowbridge and a stronger squad turned out to give a good account of itself, finishing 4th on the night but 11th overall in the league. Again, strong swims from the younger age group teams were a feature of the Penguin’s performance but a better showing than in the first round gala was also made by the older teams. A major talking point was the unfortunate disqualification of a breaststroke team!
The third round, to be held at Salisbury again, is coming up on Saturday, 9th Feb. We want an excellent turn out of swimmers so that we can repeat or better the performance of the last round in order to force ourselves into the ‘Division2’ Final on 15th March. Last year we came 3rd in this final and 8th overall, losing out by just one point on 2nd and 7th place, respectively. Make sure Mike Wootton knows about your availability if selected to swim.
